Died: January 1991, Woodstock
Cause of death: Heart Attack.
Notable because: Was appointed keyboard player with 'THE BAND' as heir to Richard Manuel.
Stan Szelest was a rock pianist who toured with Neil Young, Jackson Browne and Graham Nash.
Mr. Szelest was in Woodstock recording an album with Levon Helm, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson when he had a heart attack.
He played for more than 30 years in Stan and the Ravens, a band popular in western New York, perfecting a blues-based style that he worked to pass on to several aspiring musicians.
After forming Stan and the Ravens in 1958, Mr. Szelest took time out to work with Lonnie Mack and the Hawks. The Hawks later backed Bob Dylan and became famous as the Band. Mr. Szelest recorded with Roy Buchanan, Mack, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jesse Ed Davis, Delbert McClinton and Northern Lights.
"Stan Szelest was a living fountain of rock and roll piano, a one-of-a-kind player. His prescence, the way he could play piano, was overwhelming. I tried to play what Stan was doing with his left hand. I wasn't stealing. I was learning. One night, Stan gave me a look while I was copying him. He stared at me with a super-conscious look in his eye - and magic! - all of a sudden I got better at doubling his left hand. He had transmitted some powerful force to me. Stan could just give it to you if he wanted."
